Personalised Support for ADHD Challenges

My approach to working with ADHD is shaped not only by professional training, but also by lived experience. I understand first-hand how ADHD can affect daily functioning, emotional regulation, relationships, and self-esteem. This insight allows me to connect with others in a way that is compassionate, informed, and deeply respectful of the challenges they may be facing.

Whether I’m supporting individuals overwhelmed by executive function struggles, couples navigating miscommunication and emotional disconnect, or parents managing the emotional highs and lows of raising a neurodivergent child, I tailor support that recognises both the difficulties and the strengths of living with ADHD. My aim is to provide practical tools while creating a therapeutic space where clients feel deeply understood without any sense of judgment.

Tailored ADHD Therapy Approaches

Although the symptoms of ADHD are often stereotyped on social media, every individual and couple with ADHD is different. For support to be genuinely effective, these differences must be taken into account by an ADHD Therapist, because a ‘one size fits all’ approach never really works.

I offer bespoke ADHD therapy and support, focussed on your specific needs, which are identified through a detailed, thorough assessment at the start of our work together. The assessment gives me a clear understanding of your particular circumstances and symptoms, enabling us to choose the best strategies to manage your (or your family member’s) unique presentation of ADHD.

Various approaches can be used to support you. Depending on your needs. I am able to provide professionally trained:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for ADHD - which is described below

  • ADHD Couples Counselling - to help manage the impact of ADHD on relationships, commonly experienced by many couples

  • Parent Coaching - to support parents with children diagnosed with or exhibiting the traits of ADHD

  • Alternatively, I can deliver Health and Wellbeing or personalised ADHD Coaching support - focussed on helping you to develop the key strategies to manage daily life with ADHD.

Depending upon your assessment and goals, ADHD Therapy will often focus on:

  • Modifying Thinking: Changing unhelpful thinking patterns, that can be difficult to break free from on your own.

  • Emotional Regulation: For many people with ADHD, managing emotion is one of the hardest symptoms to control. Small setbacks can result in a dramatic expression of emotion, leading to feelings of guilt or shame and impacting our relationships, family dynamics and career. ADHD focussed CBT can help individuals to identify triggers and learn regulation techniques to reduce the frequency of emotional dysregulation and the consequences that can result.

  • Treating Low Self-Esteem and Rejection Sensitivity: Low Self-Esteem and rejection sensitivity is very often present alongside ADHD. This can lead to constant anxiety about being judged, poor self-worth, and a lack of confidence in social situations. Unless changed, this can result in failure to achieve our potential in many areas of life.

  • Reducing Problematic Behaviours: These behaviours commonly impact the areas of life that we care most deeply about, such as our significant relationships or the way we are viewed at work etc.

  • Managing Impulsivity: Developing the ability to pause, assess the situation and identify the most helpful course of action, rather than simply reacting from emotion or the first idea that comes into your head.

  • Adapting ‘Self-Sabotaging’ Tendencies: Recognising where these are present and changing any behaviours or thinking patterns that cause difficulties.

  • Treating Other Mental Health Conditions: It is not unusual for people to experience other symptoms alongside their ADHD. Some of the common mental health conditions that may have been diagnosed with your ADHD include Anxiety, Depression, OCD and Insomnia. CBT has been shown to be effective at treating these.

  • Effective Coping Strategies: I will help you to gain a toolkit of practical coping strategies to help you navigate common challenges such as organisation, planning, and managing impulsivity. I am used to modifying CBT techniques to equip individuals and couples with the interventions that work best in their particular situations.

ADHD Therapy can be delivered either Face to Face in my purpose built counselling studio in Bristol or Online. I also provide therapy outdoors, offering ‘Walk and Talk’ Counselling, which many people with ADHD find helpful as it removes the need to remain in one place during the session.

CBT for ADHD can be combined with any of the relevant ADHD Coaching and Support strategies, outlined below. To learn more about CBT, click here: CBT Explained

Client Testimonial

“I used Simon for ADHD Strategy coaching, and it was a great experience. His approach is very flexible, and when I needed it the sessions were more like therapy. I learnt a lot about tools I could use to develop my positive core beliefs and stop being critical of myself, as this wasn't working in my best interests. Simon is very empathic and good at listening and understanding.” JC (former client)

ADHD Relationship and Family Support

ADHD can have a significant impact on relationships and family life. Differences in communication styles, emotional regulation, varying attention levels, and planning daily routines can often lead to misunderstandings, frustration, and emotional disconnect. These challenges can be particularly difficult when they are misinterpreted as a lack of care, effort, or respect.

Specialised ADHD support helps couples and families understand the effects of ADHD, develop practical strategies, and rebuild connection with increased empathy and clarity.

ADHD Couples Counselling and Therapy

When one or both partners have ADHD, relationships often face unique challenges that traditional couples therapy may not fully address. Common difficulties include poor time management, forgetfulness, emotional impulsivity, uneven workload distribution, and difficulties with attention and listening. These patterns can eventually lead to resentment, repeated arguments, and feelings of disconnection, especially if a partner’s ADHD traits are misunderstood as laziness, carelessness, or a lack of commitment.

ADHD couples counselling offers a structured, calm and understanding space where both partners can explore how ADHD affects their relationship dynamic, developing deeper insight and increased collaboration through this process. ADHD informed couples counselling will help couples to better understand the ADHD related behaviours they are experiencing. This understanding is often the first step towards restoring empathy and trust.

Practical strategies are a key part of the counselling work. Sessions might focus on developing clearer communication techniques, building consistent routines, setting shared goals, maintaining physical intimacy or learning how to manage emotional overwhelm. Importantly, the non-ADHD partner also receives support, recognising the exhaustion and frustration that often comes from feeling unsupported, unheard, or feeling responsible for managing an unfair proportion of the parenting role.

With the right therapeutic support, couples can move from repeated conflict to shared understanding. After being given effective tools to use, couples often find they can reframe their persepective of ADHD - from a problem into a shared reality which can be navigated together with awareness, respect, and mutual care.

ADHD Parent Coaching and Support

Parents living with children displaying the traits of ADHD can sometimes feel judged, isolated and overwhelmed, often combined with a sense despair and guilt.

As an experienced ADHD Therapist and Coach, I can support you to work through these feelings. This can help you to retain a positive relationship with your child, whilst looking after yourself in the process.

I am trained in Conscious Parenting strategies, which are particularly effective for children and teenagers with ADHD or who experience difficulty regulating their emotions. Conscious Parenting Coaching will often cover the following topics:

  • Improving Emotional Regulation: Conscious Parenting Coaching helps parents to respond rather than react. This enables parents to respond with calmer, more consistent responses to ADHD related behaviours.

  • Connection Over Control: Conscious parenting focuses on understanding your child’s experience, helping you to connect with them, even during times of challenging behaviour. This results in a strengthening of trust and a sense of emotional safety for your child, which are both essential foundations for behaviour change.

  • Reducing Power Struggles: By shifting from punishment to empathy and guidance, coaching helps parents to avoid repeated conflict and instead build cooperation with their child using structured boundaries, combined with empathy.

  • Building Insight into Emotional Activators or ‘Triggers’: Parents will learn to recognise what overstimulates or emotionally dysregulates their child, allowing for a more thoughtful and supportive response with fewer escalations.

  • Supporting the Parent’s Wellbeing: Coaching recognises the emotional toll of parenting a neurodivergent child, offering you practical strategies and an empathetic validation of your situation, which I understand can be very difficult to cope with at times.

Client Testimonial

“I am much more confident in my ability as a parent and I’m enjoying spending time
(much more than previously) with my child. My relationship with my husband has improved - both as a result of the depression and anxiety going but also because therapy has helped me explore where the issues with these relationships really lay - and helped me find ways to manage them.”
